Keeping Your Faith During Times of Uncertainty

There will come times in life where you’ll enter a season or space of uncertainty; whether it’s an uncertain situation or an uncertain way you’re feeling as a result of something. No matter which of the two you may find yourself in, or perhaps both, this season or space can be quite challenging, to say the least. Although it isn’t always easy to do, keeping your faith during these times of uncertainty is absolutely key in helping you get through them.

You may be in an uncertain space right now and may feel like you just want to give up or are unsure in your faith. If you are, I want you to continue reading. I believe there will be something here that will encourage you to continue holding onto your faith no matter the circumstance(s).

Today I would like to share with you how to keep your faith and why you must keep your faith during those times of uncertainty that will arise in your life. But before we get into the how and why of it all, it’s important to first understand what it means to be or feel uncertain so you’ll understand what you’re up against and how to move forward. So without further ado, let’s get into it!

Uncertainty. What does it mean?

To be or feel uncertain simply means to be unsure, unclear, or not confident about something. I believe it often stems from a place of unfamiliarity because its something you have not experienced before. Had you gone through it before you would know what to expect, and would not be in such an uncertain place about it.

Uncertainty doesn’t entirely stem from unfamiliarity because even familiar situations can cause uncertainty. It leaves you in a place of not knowing what may be next, unsure about the outcome of something, or even not feeling confident about what’s happening in your life.

This space can be very challenging and uncomfortable to be in, but I can assure you that keeping your faith firm in God will truly help you.

Short Story

Several months ago I was in a place of uncertainty in my life. I was a struggling stay-at-home-mom (SAHM) with an infant and a toddler. It caused me to lose myself entirely, but one thing I didn’t lose was my faith in God. I didn’t know what to do, how things were going to change for me, and the list goes one. I just believed there had to be more to my life than that.

This was new for me. It was something I hadn’t experienced before, so I was unsure of how to handle it or what to expect. This is what I meant earlier when I stated that it often stems from a place of unfamiliarity. Not always, but most times.

Not all uncertain things are negative, but you should be careful because things can sometimes consume you and cause a negative reaction or outcome if you don’t know how to properly handle them.

Mentally, I just wanted to give up on everything in my life. The only thing that stopped me from giving up was my faith and trust in God. My faith in Him was my solid foundation that kept me standing even when I felt like I was breaking. Keeping faith during times of uncertainty is far from easy, but it is so necessary because the moment you give up, the enemy has won. And we can’t allow that to happen!

Now that we’ve briefly gone over what it means to be in a place of uncertainty, let’s get into the why and how of it!

This post is all about keeping your faith in God during times of uncertainty.

Keeping your faith + trusting God:

Faith is your foundation in God and must be absolutely firm and strong. It is what will keep you during those uncertain times that will creep up on you from time to time. While faith doesn’t guarantee that your situation will change, it will help change how you handle various situations and get through them. It will also assure you that everything has a purpose and will work out for the good.

Because life can be spontaneous at times and unexpected things tend to happen that you aren’t aware of or expect at a certain moment, you must always keep your faith in God and trust Him no matter how things may seem, appear, or be.

Truth is, God knows the plans He has for you and I am confident that no matter what you are facing in life, He will see you through it because He has a plan + purpose for allowing it to come into your life. Although you may feel like you can’t handle it, God knows that you are strong enough to. That’s one of the many great attributes of God; He knows the things we don’t, which is why we can always trust Him.

The Importance of keeping your faith during uncertainty:

Just think about it for a moment. What would your life become or look like if you chose to waver and give up on your faith?! The situation that you may be facing will more than likely overtake and consume you, and you’ll be left feeling uncertain about a lot more than you already are.

Your faith in God is so significant, especially during uncertain times because this is how you’ll stay connected to God and believe that it’s only a temporary thing you’re dealing with. Faith is what gives hope. And faith gives you the power to stand and move forward even when you feel like you don’t have it in you to do so; or don’t quite understand.

Ways to keep your faith during uncertain times:

When you find yourself in those uncertain moments, there are some things you can focus on doing that will help you keep your faith and get through.

1. Prayer:

Prayer is always at the top of the list when it comes to keeping your faith because it is what keeps you connected to God. It puts you in a position to walk by faith and fully trust God with everything that is happening in your life.

Prayer allows you to activate and walk in faith because you can’t physically see God nor the outcome of things, or what’s next, but you choose to trust Him. And you trust that everything will be okay because of Him.

On the other hand, prayer is your opportunity to ask God to help you and keep you. He knows how you’re feeling and what you are going through during those moments. Seek God and cast all your cares upon Him, for He cares for you, 1 Peter 5:7. You don’t have to try to figure out why or how, but just give it all to Him in prayer. He’ll be there to lead you along the way.

2. Study + Meditate on God’s Word:

Taking the time to sit quietly with God to study + meditate on His word is so important for you in maintaining your faith. We’re not taking about faith in yourself, but faith in Jesus Christ. Studying His word and pondering on it until it gets in your spirit and becomes a part of you is a daily necessity. This is key in helping you keep your faith.

It’s one thing to establish + build faith, and say you have it, but its another to actually maintain it. Keeping your faith during uncertain times requires maintenance. This is where you’ll do the necessary things to help strengthen and grow your faith so that you won’t lose your faith or become weakened in it.

Study + Meditation helps you feed your spirit with the word of God. The word of God keeps you and helps you to persevere in those moments when you want to give up, don’t know which way to go, or what to do; those unsure moments. So by studying the word and storing it in your heart and spirit, this will help you to lean on what God has said through His word and will give you something solid to hold onto so that you won’t lose your faith. Romans 10:17 says that, “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” The only way to build and maintain faith is to hear and read it.

3. Keep your mind on God:

Keeping your mind on God is sometimes hard to do while in the midst of a test or trial, but it keeps your mind off of what you’re going through and on God instead. The moment you begin to ponder on your issues, it consumes you and you’re left feeling completely overwhelmed and worried about things.

Isaiah 26:3 reminds us that, “He will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Him.” In other words, keep your thoughts on God and allow His peace of to consume you instead of what you don’t understand or what is out of your control. God will fill you with His peace and assure you that He has your back and will see you through it all.

The more you think on Christ, the more you will trust Him. It just naturally happens that way most times. Trusting Him requires your faith. The more I think about God and what I believe He has for me, the more I am able to stay strong in my faith during those times of uncertainty. This is according to your personal level of faith and belief in God.

As for myself, this is totally key in helping me keep my faith during tough times. As I stated before, don’t ponder on what’s going on, but meditate on God and His promises to you and this will help you many times.

4. Cast All Your Cares Upon Him:

1 Peter 5:7 reminds you to, “Cast your cares upon Him, for He cares for you.” You have to trust God enough to know and believe that He has your back no matter what. When various things transpire in your life it’s sometimes difficult to let it go and give it all to God. I totally get it and understand. But, when you do so, it’s such a powerful thing because you’re stepping into faith, activating it, and trusting God with it.

While doing this isn’t the easiest sometimes, it’s such a significant gesture because not only does it put your faith to work (which moves God), but it shows God that He is worthy enough to handle it and you trust Him enough to do so. If you truly believe that God cares for you and loves you like He tells you, give everything to Him. No matter what it may be, He will be there to give you what you need, for He knows everything that you have need of.

Giving it all to God will give you such a big relief as if a weight had been lifted off you. To me, that sounds like a step in the right direction to overcoming any uncertainty. The most important thing when casting all your cares upon God is, once you give it to Him, don’t take it back and try to do things your way. Release it from your hands, place it in the hands of God, and let Him take care of it.
