You’re left feeling overwhelmed, defeated, and exhausted. There’s several things that can cause you to feel this way, but you don’t have to be stuck there. Today, I would like to share with you some practical things you can do to renew your spiritual vitality. These things will encourage and uplift your spirit. If this is something you need, continue reading.
If you’ve read my last post, “Renewing Your Spiritual Vitality: 7 Key Benefits“, then you would have learned that spiritual vitality was something I first discovered through the Holy Spirit. It was during a time of my life where I was spiritually weak and overwhelmed. The Lord had spoken to me and specifically told me that I needed to renew my spiritual vitality. At the time I honestly didn’t know what spiritual vitality was. I soon discovered that spiritual vitality was another term used for spiritual strength.
For God to specifically speak to me showed me just how much He knows exactly what we need. And how much He truly cares for our well-being.
At that time I would not have known how to get myself back to a stronger place spiritually. I would have been trying to figure it out on my own. Proverbs 3:5-6 tell us to, “trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; but in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” This is so important because God knows what we don’t and we must trust Him always.
I’ve always known to pray, but I believe sometimes you need to do a little more than just that. Sometimes you need to do other things alongside praying. And let’s be honest, sometimes praying can be very challenging to do when you’re in a weak place. By doing these things that I’ll share with you, I believe they’ll help you to build up your strength.
This post is all about how to renew your spiritual vitality.
What is Spiritual Vitality?
You may be wondering, what is vitality? And what does it mean to renew your spiritual vitality?
According to Dictionary.com vitality means:
- Exuberant physical strength or mental vigor (active strength or force; energy or power.)
- Capacity for survival or for the continuation of a meaningful or purposeful existence.
- Power to live or grow.
So to sum it up, vitality is an exuberant strength to do something; resilience; endurance.
As I began to study a little deeper, I discovered that Spiritual Vitality, specifically for Christians, is simply an exuberant spiritual strength or power one possesses to continue to grow and endure in spite of hardships, challenges, etc. This is what it means to have spiritual strength, vigor, or vitality.
What Causes Your Vitality to Become Weakened:
There are several things that can cause you to become spiritually weakened and exhausted. This list is just a few of the things I’ve personally experienced along my journey.
1. The Cares of Life:
If you’re not careful enough, life’s demands can cause you to become overwhelmed. Oftentimes, we find ourselves being consumed with life to the point where we just feel weighed down. This is why it’s so important to, “Cast your cares upon Him, for He cares for you.”, I Peter 5:7. God doesn’t want you to carry the weight of life on your shoulders. He says to lay your burdens down before Him. Give it all to Him! Trust me, He can bear it, better than you ever could.
2. Distractions:
There goes that “D” word we all can’t stand; Distractions! When distractions come into your space, they often lead to a decline in your spiritual vigor. Not only do they interrupt + disrupt your flow and focus; they pull you away from what truly matters. Distractions also deprive you of your strength and energy; depending on what the distraction is. I totally understand that we can’t completely get away from them, but keeping them minimal is key in staying afloat.
3. Not Spending Much Time w/ God:
When you find yourself not spending much time with God, it eventually shows in your life. You began to feel the effects of not spending much time with Him. This is one of the most leading factors in feeling spiritually weakened, because we gain our strength from the Lord. If you’re not spending much time with God, how then will you gain strength or maintain your strength?
4. Lack of Prayer:
“A woman who lacks a prayer life is a woman who is disconnected from God.” In, “Rebuilding Yourself in God After You’ve Lost Yourself“, I shared that it’s vital to establish a lifestyle of prayer. Prayer must become a daily part of your life and who you are.
“A woman who lacks a prayer life is a woman who is disconnected from God.”
Prayer is always at the top of the list when it comes to growing closer to God and flourishing spiritually. A lack of prayer can be detrimental for you because prayer is how you build up your spirit. Prayer is also direct communication with God. This is how you converse with the Lord, hear from Him, and receive guidance.

We’ve covered what spiritual vitality means and some things that can cause you to become spiritually weakened. Now, let’s get into why you’re really here! The following are ways in which you will be able to renew your spiritual strength.
How to Renew Your Spiritual Vitality:
Here are some key things you can do to renew your spiritual strength.
1. Read Scriptures Specifically on Spiritual Strength:
When I was in a low place and felt discouraged, I read scriptures specifically for Spiritual Strength. I discovered several key scriptures in the Bible that I found to be very helpful and encouraging.
To find these scriptures, go to the back of your bible in the “God’s Answers to Man’s Concerns” section. There you will look for spiritual strength. There will be three referenced scriptures, but from there you can do your own research to find others. I find this to be a great starting point. You may also look for scriptures on spiritual strength in a bible app by simply typing in the term ‘Strength”. My favorite go-to bible app is YouVersion Bible App, but using any bible app works!
2. Specifically Pray for Strength:
When you’re in desperate need of strength, pray specifically for it. It’s very important during the times you truly need it, to be as specific as possible. Tell the Lord exactly what you need.
As I’ve specifically prayed for strength, God granted me just that. He gave me the strength to continue forward even when it was tough to do so. Also, God became my strength when I didn’t have my own to lean on. II Corinthians 12:9 reminds us that, His “strength is made perfect in weakness.” That is, in our weakness.
I want you to know that there is true power in being specific about what you need and want. Besides, the Lord already knows what you have need of before you even open your mouth to tell Him. He’s just waiting to hear from you.
3. Listen to Uplifting + Inspirational Content:
Feeding your spirit with positive and uplifting things can be both encouraging and empowering when you’re in that space. A good Christian or non-Christian movie, inspirational YouTube video, or an uplifting song will get your spirit up. A combination of the three are what I do very often to keep myself positive, strong, and encouraged.
4. Attend Church Regularly to Renew Your Vitality:
Attending church regularly is something that you should be doing regularly. And not just when things aren’t going well for you. Attending church will help you feel renewed, empowered, and stronger. Also, being amongst other believers of Christ will help to renew your strength as well. Being in the company of like-minded individuals is always key.
Hebrews 10:25 tells us to, “not forsake the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another and so much the more as you see the Day approaching”. In other words, we are to uplift and keep one another encouraged in the Lord. This is our reasonable service as children of God.
5. Spend Time w/ God:
Spending quality time with God is a daily necessity. It is absolutely necessary for your vitality. Not only does it greatly impact your strength, but it helps you to maintain your strength.
You could never go wrong when spending time with God becomes your daily lifestyle. When it becomes your lifestyle you’ll notice that you’re in such a better spiritual place more often. God will help you and keep you; you just have to allow Him to. Do you need some new ways to spend time with God? If so, read my post, “9 Compelling Ways to Experience Intimacy with God”. I love to spend time with God.
But my question is.what is the difference between prayers and spending time with God.
Help me know better sir. thanks
Hello Franklin,
Thank you for reading my post. There’s not much difference between the two. However, while prayer is indeed a form of spending time with God, I believe most times we use prayer as a way to communicate our requests unto God more than we use prayer as a time to rest in God’s presence, give thanksgiving, etc. Oftentimes, we pray when we are in need of something and need to ask God for something. While that is great, God wants us to also come into prayer to commune with Him and just talk to Him without our many requests. (i.e. thanking Him, blessing His name)
Spending time with God is an intimate time where you would get quiet with God, worship Him, write to Him, sit quietly to just hear Him clearly, study His word, etc. And of course prayer. The most important thing of all while doing these things is to go before Him with a pure + genuine heart.
God Bless You!
Thank you for sharing your experience and how God turned it around for His glory! GB you and your efforts!
